Ballater in Aberdeenshire was an early spa town whose tourist development was boosted by being the terminus of the Deeside railway (closed 1966). The Royal family would arrive by rail for their visits to Balmoral and the town still celebrates it royal connections. Today tourism and fishing are important to Ballater.
