Bo'ness, Falkirk

Population 14,868

Bo'ness in Falkirk Council was a port in the 17th century. It exported coal and slag and imported timber from Scandinavia. The collapse of the tobacco trade and the opening of the canal saw a decline in the importance of the port. In the 19th century pit props were manufactured and ship breaking was undertaken. Now it is a commuter town, particularly for Grangemouth and Edinburgh.

This type of large town is extremely mixed in terms of demographics. There is a particularly wide range of people, housing and activities. The number of older couples with no children is higher than average. There is a mix of professional and non-professional jobs, and part-time and self-employment are both important for a significant proportion of residents. Socioeconomic status is higher than in other kinds of town and there is a mix of professionals and nonprofessionals, those with higher and lower educational attainment. 1 What's this?
