Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire

Clydebank in West Dunbartonshire has a long history as an industrial town. In the 1870s a major shipbuilder was moved from Glasgow port down the Clyde setting up at Clydebank. The company provided housing for the workers. Further industrial and manufacturing jobs arrived thereafter including the Singer sewing machine factory. In WWII the Clydebank blitz destroyed much of Clydebank including industrial buildings. An armaments factory was located in Clydebank. Shipbuilding continued in Clydebank (first as John Brown, then as Upper Clyde Shipbuilders and latterly with a series of owners), closing in 2000. It is associated with Red Clydeside socialist movement.

Social and council housing are the norm in these large towns. Manufacturing and construction are the dominant forms of employment. Health and social work services are particularly active.
