Dumbarton in West Dunbartonshire was capital of the Kingdom of Alclud. It was a significant port servicing industries in the Vale of Leven. In the 19th century it was known for shipbuilding, glassmaking and whisky production. One small shipyard still operates. The whisky distillery changed hands a number of times but was mothballed by Pernod Ricard in 2002 although the bonded warehouses and bottling plant remain active. There were a number of other manufacturers including Westclox and Burroughs who also closed. Polaroid still has a small factory. The Faslane Naval base still provides local employment as do Aggreko and BBC Scotland Drama Studios.
