View Dumbarton on map

Dumbarton in West Dunbartonshire was capital of the Kingdom of Alclud. It was a significant port servicing industries in the Vale of Leven. In the 19th century it was known for shipbuilding, glassmaking and whisky production. The whisky distillery changed hands a number of times but was mothballed by Pernod Ricard in 2002 although the bonded warehouses and bottling plant remain active. There were a number of other manufacturers including Westclox and Burroughs who also closed. Polaroid still has a small factory. The Faslane Naval base still provides local employment as do Aggreko and BBC Scotland Drama Studios.

In large towns such as this, this population includes older people, some still in work often in less well paid sectors. It also includes a significant inactive population, some in poorer health. There is a higher proportion of single households and car ownership is lower.

Dumbarton is an interdependent town.

Its most similar towns are Barrhead, Glenrothes, and Largs.
