Forth is in South Lanarkshire. It was historically a handloom weaving village. It became a mining and quarrying town were then developed. It was known as Wilsontown after the local laird developed an ironworks in the 18th century. The mines closed in the 1950s and 1960s but open cast mining continued for some years. Now a major windfarm is located close to Forth but it has not generated jobs.

In this, and similar small towns, people experience more challenging circumstances with higher rates of unemployment, poorer health, lack of a car, lower levels of education and lower social grades than other groups. A higher proportion live in social rented housing. There is a higher proportion of single person households and lone parents.
