Haddington, East Lothian

Haddington is in East Lothian. The name is Anglo-Saxon and it was an important town in the Middle Ages. Its location on the River Tyne meant that it became a point of conflict between the Scots and English. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was an important agricultural centre with a grain market. It is the administrative centre for East Lothian. The former Mitsubishi plant closed in the late 1990s but the town continues to be an important service centre and has a maltings.
