Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and administrative centre for Highland Council. It has a long history dating back to Pictish times. It was the scene of many conflicts - with the Norwegians, raids by the McDonalds, involvment with the Jacobites. Today it has city status. Scottish National Heritage is headquartered in Inverness. It is also home to the University of the Highlands and Islands. Spin off companies and small industries have developed including a medical suplies company.
