Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire

Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire has a history as an industrial town. Until the 18th century woollens, clothes and shoemaking were the key industries. Some of these industries carried on in more recent time with Saxone operating a shoe factory. Mining and the Industrial Revolution introduced new heavy industry to the town including engineering, the manufacturing of locomotives, tractor manufacturing (Massey Ferguson) and carpet making (BMK). Most of this industry has now closed. An engine refurbishment plant still operates and engineering components also still operate. The home of Johnny Walker whisky the loss of Diageo was a blow to the town.

This type of large town is extremely mixed in terms of demographics. There is a particularly wide range of people, housing and activities. The number of older couples with no children is higher than average. There is a mix of professional and non-professional jobs, and part-time and self-employment are both important for a significant proportion of residents.
