Kirkintilloch is in East Dunbartonsire and is the administrative centre for the council area. Located on the Antonine wall and the Forth and Clyde Canal the town has a long history and industrial heritage from textiles and cotton mills to coal, iron and nickel production in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 1960's new public housing was built for Glasgow overspill. In the 20th century it had important foundries and shipbuilding. The most famous product from Kirkintilloch was the red post and phone boxes. Today it is a local service centre and has expanded with new private housing for commuters to Glasgow.
