Plains is in North Lanarkshire. The village grew to be a town as mining attracted more workers. The Ardenrigg Colliery closed in late 2oth century but open cast mining continued for some time. New public housing was built in the 20th century. Geest (bananas) used to have a distribution depot in the town. The site is now a timber yard. Beecham also had a distribution depot in the town. The lack of current employment opportunities has meant more people have become commuters.
