St Andrews, Fife

Population 16,870

St Andrews is in Fife. It is an historic town with an ecclesiastical history stretching back to pre-reformation times. The university was founded in 1411. Post- reformation times saw the town decline. Today it is known as a tourist town popular with both local and international visitors. It is also the home of golf and the Royal and Ancient are a governing body for the sport. The university has expanded its student numbers over the last 40 years with new building on the North Haugh.

St Andrews has a large student population, with many living in privately rented accommodation with other students. Many are in part time work in the accommodation and food service sectors. This shows that a significant part of the workforce is likely to be made up of those working alongside their studies. Many are reliant on walking, cycling, or public transport to move around, with a comparably small proportion of the population owning cars. 1 What's this?
