Dalry in North Ayrshire was originally a weaving community, many sewing and embroidering for the Paisley and Glasgow manufacturers. In the 1840s coal mining changed the area. There were various iron works (the Ayrshire, Glengarnock, Eglinton and Blair) fired by local coal. Clay bricks were also manufactured. A large chemical plant (formerly Roche, now DSM) operates today producing vitamins.
