Douglas is a town in South Lanarkshire. The settlement grew initially in relation to Douglas Castle home of the Lords of Douglas. In the Industrial Revolution woollen mills and mining became important. Today it is a local service centre.

In this, and similar small towns, people experience more challenging circumstances with higher rates of unemployment, poorer health, lack of a car, lower levels of education and lower social grades than other groups.
