Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway

Kirkcudbright is located in Dumfries and Galloway. It retains its historic character. Its early importance was as an ecclesiastical place with a friary in the 12th century. Up until the 14th century it was an important cloth port but it was destroyed in the 1500s. New defences were then built. In the 1900s it became popular with artists and it is sometimes called the 'artist's town' although locals consider it a fishing and tourist town.
