Kirkmuirhill and Blackwood are in South Lanarkshire. The two original villages merged over time. They were coaching halts on the London Glasgow route in times past. Following the discovery of coal the town expanded and in the 1920s public housing was built. Since the demise of the mines and the closure of other employment in nearby towns there has been a lack of employment and an increase in social problems in the town.
