Once a village with a ferry crossing to Inverness it was sidetracked with the opening of the Kessock Bridge in 1982. It it is a largely a suburb of Inverness. It has seen a significant uptake in popularity recently, largely as a response to expanding opportunities in Inverness.

In this and similar small towns, the population is commonly older. The group has higher social grade status than other groups, a higher proportion are owner occupiers and car ownership is also higher.
