Pencuik is located in Midlothian. It began as a planned village in 1776. The Valleyfield paper mill (last mill closed in 2004) led to the expansion of the town. While many of the residents are commuters the town has local services and retains a base of small industries. Glencorse Barracks is to the east of the town.
