Selkirk is in Scottish Borders. It has a long history as an abbey, a medieval burgh and a shoemaking town. The monks from the abbey abandoned the town and it was also destroyed but re-emerged as a vibrant market town. In recent times it became known for the woollen industry. This industry saw a decline in the 1970s but today both Loch Carron and Andrew Elliot are both present in the town. Other light industries (Cademuir) and service sector activities (Valtra) are also present.

In this medium town, population includes older people, some still in work often in less well paid sectors. It also includes a significant inactive population, some in poorer health. There is a higher proportion of single households and car ownership is lower.

Selkirk is an interdependent to independent town.

Its most similar towns are Alva, Anstruther, Blairgowrie, and Brechin.
