Tweedbank was formerly part of Galashiels but is now established in I ts own right as a town. It has extensive industrial parks and housing areas. It is essentially a suburb of Galashiels. The Lowood estate which was put on the market will see further expansion of the town. The recent expansion owes much to its role as the railhead for the Borders Railway.

In this type of small town, the population comprises families with a higher proportion of adults in the 25–44 age grouping. Higher rates of full time employment are found.
