Wick is located in Caithness in Highland. Its name reflects its Norse origins. It had a large fishing fleet in the 18th and 19th centuries. Herring stocks declined in the 20th century. The port, which traded with Europe historically, nowadays has an important role as a harbour for off shore supply vessels. The town is a local service centre and has an airport.

In medium towns like this one, people experience more challenging circumstances with higher rates of unemployment, poorer health, lack of a car, lower levels of education and lower social grades than other groups. A higher proportion live in social rented housing. There is a higher proportion of single person households and lone parents.

Wick is an independent to interdependent town.
