Winchburgh in West Lothian was an oil shale town. The older history of the town was associated with Niddrie Castle. In the late 19th century the Oakbank Oil Company began exploiting oil shale at the Niddries Castle Oil Works. They built housing for the workers. With no local industry the town is now a commuter settlement.

In this and similar medium towns, this population comprises families with a higher proportion of adults in the 25–44 age grouping. Higher rates of full time employment are found.
