Newton Stewart is in Dumfries and Galloway. It was a planned settlement built by the Stewart family in 1677. After the becoming the bridging point over the River Cree it increased in importance becoming a staging point on the road for drovers from Ireland and developing as a local market town with a wool market. It remains a local market town. The name dates from the late 18th century when the Douglas family purchased the estate. today it supports local agriculture and forestry as well as tourism.

In this medium town, population includes older people, some still in work often in less well paid sectors. It also includes a significant inactive population, some in poorer health. There is a higher proportion of single households and car ownership is lower.
